Mama Stories

One of my favorite take-a-ways from Angelique’s story is her work/life balance. I love how she makes sure the kids are put first in front of all else. As mama’s with personal businesses, it’s hard to not want to reply to every email or be fine tuning your message every minute you get, but our children do come first. Hell, it’s the kids that we have that are usually the inspiration behind our “why” of starting our businesses in the first place!

Thank you for sharing Angelique!! I loved reading your story!

Tell us about you and what you do!
My name is Angelique and I am a 31 year old mother to three children 5 and under. Being a mother is my main job and passion but I am also a children’s homewares designer, currently designing organic cotton quilted blankets and pillowcases.

Do you have a full/ part time job? Do you have a side hustle? What are they?
I am a primary school teacher by trade but I have chosen not to return to work while my children are young. I want to be around for pick ups/drop offs and I want to be able to be involved in their school/kinder lives.

Walk us through a normal day of yours. Soccer games, daycare, work, dinner, ballet practices, what’s involved?
All three of my children wake around 6am so our day starts early. We spend the morning getting ready for school (which is a new thing this year!) and then walk to school with three kids in tow. Between then and midday it’s a combination of jobs around the house, preparing food for the kids and if we’re lucky, a quick walk with the dog. My daughter sleeps at midday so this is the one chance I get during the day to check emails. Once she wakes it’s off to pick up my eldest daughter from school and continue with the jobs/preparing food. My husband is usually home by 5ish so we get the kids fed and bathed together and then the kids are all off to bed at 6.30pm/7pm. I love this time because it’s when my husband and I have a chance to hang out and watch trashy TV. This is also when I reply to emails and get my hustle on!!

How do you prioritize your to do list?
Well the children are obviously the first priority as they can’t survive without me! And then after I sort them out, I write myself a to-do list to keep on track of what needs to be done. I used to get consumed by my business and feel the need to reply straight away to emails etc however I hated that my kids saw me on the phone a lot. So now, I save all business work and communications for midday when my daughter sleeps at after 7pm when they’re all in bed.

Do you get down time in your day? If so, what’s one thing you do for yourself daily?
I definitely don’t get down time during the day. My husband is a carpenter so he is up at 5.30 getting ready for work so I would need to be up at 4am if I wanted to do anything before then. I don’t think so!! So after 7pm is really the only time I have to myself, however that’s when I want to hang out with hubby. So my goal for 2017 is to try and squeeze some ‘me’ time in somewhere!

How many hours of sleep do you get on a regular basis?
I usually go to bed at 11pm (way too late) and my kids are up at 6. So that’s 7 hours. However I am still breastfeeding so can often be up twice to her and then sometimes the older kids will wake up with a bad dream. So while I get 6-7 hours sleep it is almost always broken!
